At least 1 injured, many trapped in Miami parking garage collapse

More than 100 rescuers on Wednesday rushed to the scene of a partially-built parking garage that collapsed on the campus of a Miami school, trapping workers inside, officials said.

Cries for help could be heard from inside the rubble of the structure being built on the campus of Miami-Dade College West, officials said.

“We have multiple victims trapped inside,” Cristina Armand, a spokeswoman for Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue, told the Los Angeles Times.

One person had been taken to a hospital, she said. There were no reports of fatalities so far, Armand added.

Images streaming on the website of WSVN-TV showed workers carrying some people to waiting vehicles.

The four-story garage, which was under construction, collapsed about 11:40 a.m., Armand said. She said it was a “pancake” collapse, meaning the structure fell from the top down. Televised images showed a large section of concrete on the ground.

There was no immediate cause for the collapse.

Rescue units in the surrounding area were responding to the scene. Armand estimated that more than 100 first responders had arrived and more personnel were expected.

“All of our technical units were called in to assist,” she said. The technical units will help locate survivors and find a route through the rubble.

The garage had yet to open so there were no students parked inside. All of the injured are believed to be workers at the site.
