A bus carrying teenagers home from a Michigan church camp crashed Saturday afternoon on a busy Indianapolis thoroughfare, killing three people and sending multiple passengers to the hospital, fire officials said.
He tried to turn off the interstate near an overpass at 96th Street and Keystone Avenue, Burris said, but the bus was going too fast and overturned.
The bus was carrying 40 passengers, including children and adults, who are members of the Colonial Hills Baptist Church in Indianapolis.
Among the three dead are a husband and wife.
First-responders extracted five people who were trapped in the overturned bus, Burris said.
Four helicopters and 12 ambulances took the injured to five hospitals. The Associated Press reported 26 people were hospitalized.
Burris said a crew cleaned up a diesel spill that resulted from the crash.
