Banker John Delaney to face Roscoe Bartlett in Maryland’s 6th
Defying much of the state party establishment, Democrats in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District chose businessman John Delaney to challenge Republican Rep. Roscoe Bartlett this fall in a district that could help the party regain control of the House of Representatives.
Delaney, who was endorsed by former President Bill Clinton and the Washington Post, defeated state Sen. Rob Garagiola, a rising star in Annapolis who had the backing of Gov. Martin O’Malley and a number of other prominent Maryland Democrats. Some believe the district, which was redrawn to favor Democrats in the general election, was carved with Garagiola in mind.
Delaney won 54% of the vote to Garagiola’s 29%. Three other candidates took the remaining votes.
A wealthy businessman who recently started a community bank cooperative to compete with larger banks, Delany far outraised and outspent the competition, and he loaned at least $1.25 million to his campaign.
He will face Rep. Roscoe Bartlett in November.
Bartlett, who was challenged in his primary by seven other candidates, won easily with 44% of the vote.
The general election will be a greater challenge. Bartlett is a top target of Democrats after large portions of liberal Montgomery County were added to his district during redistricting.
The district now contains more registered Democrats than Republicans and is considered one of the places where Democrats would have to prevail in November if they are to retake control of the House.
