Israeli tank fire killed 18 Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip early today, Palestinian medical staff said, a day after at least eight Palestinians were killed in the territory.

The Israeli military said it was not immediately aware of any shells having been fired in the area this morning.

Palestinian security sources said Israeli troops shot dead four Palestinian gunmen and a civilian in a raid today near the city of Jenin in the West Bank. The gunmen were from the militant group Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, part of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah faction.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said troops had opened fire during an operation to arrest wanted gunmen in the village of Yamun.

Earlier, an Israeli warplane bombed and destroyed the home of a leading Hamas militant in the Gaza Strip in a raid that caused no casualties because the occupants had been warned to leave, Hamas and security sources said.

The attack on the Gaza City home of Ahmed Jabari, second in command in Hamas’ military wing, occurred a day after Hamas militants fired rockets at Israel, including several that struck the city of Ashkelon but caused no casualties.

Israeli troops have said their weeklong incursion into the Gaza Strip is designed to stop the militants from firing rockets into Israel.
