Santorini's whitewashed villages that overlook sapphire waters are actually volcanic islands situated around the Santorini volcano's caldera. An eruption in 1470 BC devastated the island of Thera (Santorini) and the nearby island Crete, possibly leading to the demise of the Minoan civilization.
The eruption is also believed to be the source of Plato's myth of Atlantis.
