Readers React: Henry Waxman’s thoughtfulness

Not many voters would dispute Jim Newton’s excellent column on the difficulty of finding a 33rd District candidate to fill Democrat Henry Waxman’s political shoes now that he’s retiring. (“Can anyone fill Henry Waxman’s shoes?,” Opinion, May 11)

Recently I had an opportunity to witness firsthand his character and thoughtfulness toward a Korean War veteran friend of mine (not even from his 33rd District) who enlisted one of Waxman’s aides to track down two Bronze Stars that had been awarded but somehow overlooked years ago and never presented.

When the medals were found, verified and sent to his office here in L.A., Waxman personally called the veteran and said he would prefer to dignify the honor and have a small presentation ceremony in his office with family and friends.

Waxman generously took time and personally managed the affair. Needless to say, it was an unforgettable gesture that was much appreciated.
