Letters: Resolve to trim to ‘plastisphere’

Share

Re “A trash-based ecosystem,” Dec. 28

Thank you for your timely article about the destructive influence of plastics on our oceans and lakes. I was surprised that the article doesn’t note that water bottles and plastic bags are two of the primary sources of plastic pollution.

The article divvies up the 245 million tons of plastic produced annually around the world to about 70 pounds per person. Much of this pollution comes from Western industrialized countries like the U.S.

With the new year upon us, we can all commit to making some important changes. Instead of focusing resolutions on our waists, let’s address our waste.

This reader joins the many others who are so grateful for your reporting on the obscenity of the seeming indifference of the public and government entities in addressing the profound environmental concern of the “plastisphere.”

As the marine ecosystem reels under the six decades of abuse by industry and public neglect, finally scientists in this field are bringing enlightened information to bear that just might light a fire under some in governmental agencies that might attempt some regulation to mitigate this lethal course. One can only hope.

Thanks to moneyed special interests, usually our government is a few decades late addressing social and environmental concerns. Articles such as this inform those in the public who care about having a healthy environment and move them to act.
