Letters: A state of denial on ‘Jefferson’

Share

Re “Northern Californians ponder a separate state,” Dec. 29

Our dear friends in the northern part of California who want to form their own state of Jefferson are on a fool’s errand.

With a new state come two new senators in Congress. The last time we did this, the balance in the Senate was maintained by adding Republican Alaska and Democratic Hawaii. Without a more liberal state to add to the union, Jefferson won’t happen.

Instead, perhaps these folks could become part of Idaho. They could ask Oregon or Nevada to build a land bridge to connect them. They could then see how much money they could get from Boise as compared to Sacramento.

If they do it, good riddance.

There are many reasons that advocates of a new state are pursuing a pipe dream. The first is that the California Legislature would have to vote to approve it.

Second, among the terrible effects such a move would have is to give a handful of people equal representation in the Senate with big states like Texas, Illinois and — yes — California.
