Readers React: Los Feliz nuns don’t have their community’s interest at heart

To the editor: I am a resident of Waverly Drive, which is a quiet, winding residential street in Los Feliz with no sidewalks. The property in dispute (the Roman Catholic Archdiocese wants to sell it to singer Katy Perry, the nuns to a restaurateur) was built as a private residence before it was given to the nuns, who were permitted to have it rezoned as a convent and later as a spiritual retreat. (“Disputed sale of convent to Katy Perry goes to judge,” July 28)

It was disappointing to hear that the sisters chose to try to sell the home to Dana Hollister. Needless to say, Hollister’s plans to build a hotel, flip the property or just throw long parties — as she did at another neighborhood estate — are unwelcome. Perry has offered a clean deal and can afford to maintain the property as the private residence it was built to be.

I wonder what has become of these nuns’ vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. Does forming a nonprofit give them a loophole? Are they so angry with the archdiocese that they will throw this neighborhood under the bus?
