Readers React: A big victory for fast-food workers

To the editor: For far too long, huge companies like McDonald’s have raked in profits while employees suffer from poor working conditions, low pay and no union. (“The NLRB-McDonald’s ruling could be the beginning of a franchise war,” Aug. 4)

The ruling by the National Labor Relations Board’s general counsel that McDonald’s franchisee workers should be treated as “joint employees” is monumental. McDonald’s will no longer be able to pass the buck of injustice of low pay to its franchisees while simultaneously telling them how to run every other aspect of their business.

But as we have seen in history, the single stroke of any pen is hardly enough to guarantee justice. For this reason, I anxiously await the next move by our fast-food workers.
