Readers React: Robin Williams: Brilliant but gone too soon

To the editor: There seem to be several inherent traits shared by so many of America’s most brilliant entertainers that account for their shortened lives and careers. (“Robin Williams dies at 63; Oscar-winning actor, comic genius,” Aug. 11)

Substance abuse and depression seem to cause so many of our most creative to die early. Amid the overcrowded, privacy-deprived world that engrosses so many celebrity lives, there lies a certain void and, ironically, a sense of loneliness.

Robin Williams was brilliant. While he was first introduced as a “funny man,” his greatest works were his more serious roles. As he battled his demons throughout his wonderful career, it now appears that he too succumbed to what troubled him and so many others.

While his great work will live on, it is very sad to think that someone could not “reach” him. Rest in peace, Robin.

To the editor: I lived with suicidal thoughts for 18 years, survived attempts, and ultimately wrote a book about suicide prevention that aims to help people save their own lives.

I just wish Williams had waited long enough for the intensity of the suicidal thoughts to pass, as they always do.

But I get it, the why. It’s what is called “metapain,” the pain of feeling pain. As I wrote in my book, the brain has a mind of its own, particularly when it’s trying to kill you.

What a tragic loss for everyone.

To the editor: As Edna St. Vincent Millay once wrote:

“My candle burns at both ends/ It will not last the night/ But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends/ It gives a lovely light!”

Williams had enough energy and creativity for five lives. He will be missed.

To the editor: We often use the word “beloved” in describing those whom we deeply appreciate and revere. With the tragic loss of Williams, “beloved” aptly reflects our emotion.
