Letters: Real Republicans aren’t drug warriors

Share

Re “Legislature cools on drug war,” Column, Sept. 9

Thank you to Republican Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (Twin Peaks) and Rocky Chavez (Oceanside) for casting deciding votes to lower penalties for nonviolent drug possession. Thank you to George Skelton for recognizing those true conservatives who oppose the drug war, the most extreme example of the nanny state that Republicans often decry.

Those who support individual freedom should oppose locking up adults for nonviolent behavior, as incarceration only makes it far worse for them, their families and the taxpayers who must pay to imprison those who have only hurt themselves.

The war on drugs should not be a war on people.
