Palm Beach Memory
The piece “Give Yourself Credit: You Belong in Palm Beach,” Nov. 1, brought back many memories of that Florida town. During World War II, the U.S. Coast Guard Women’s Reserve had a training station at the old Palm Beach Biltmore and the U.S. Air Force took over the Breakers Hotel for a hospital. Most of the homes were boarded up at the time because unfriendly submarines had been operating off the coast, but some of the residents opened their homes to offer us hospitality. I particularly enjoyed the comment about the Lake Trail on the lake front. It was one of our favorite ways to spend a Sunday afternoon.
