‘King tide’ floods part of PCH in Sunset Beach

A portion of Pacific Coast Highway in Sunset Beach was reduced to one lane for vehicles as a “king tide” flooded the street Wednesday morning.

Crews from Huntington Beach Public Works and the California Department of Transportation were busy removing water from the highway between Broadway and Park Avenue after a 7.6-foot tide rolled in.

City Public Works Director Travis Hopkins said Huntington Beach recently made a flood wall higher, but Wednesday’s tide proved higher than what was forecast by the National Weather Service.

“The tides are coming in higher than the published tide chart,” he said.

The weather service is expecting high tides of up to 7.5 feet in Orange County at about 8:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving and up to 7.3 feet at about 9:10 a.m. Friday.
