Edison, Huntington Beach to collide

Edison High and Huntington Beach picked up Sunset League victories Tuesday to set up a Thursday showdown, and Ocean View added two more victories in girls’ basketball action.

With the wins, the Chargers, Oilers and Seahawks stayed in contention for league titles. All three teams head into the final week of league play in second place.

Edison and Marina clashed Tuesday at Dave Mohs Gymnasium and it was the host Chargers who claimed a 67-33 victory.

Senior forward Jackie Bento scored 18 points and had six rebounds, senior shooting guard Alyssa Atencio had eight points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, and senior shooting guard Jenni Kwok had eight rebounds, seven steals and five assists for the Chargers.

Senior guard Christina Mark led Marina with eight points.

The win put Edison at 5-2 in league — good for second place tie with Huntington Beach, and 10-12 overall.

Marina slipped to 2-5 in league.

“We only gave up 10 points in the second half, so I was happy about their defensive effort,” Edison Coach Sara Brown said. “The entire team was able to contribute and get [playing] minutes.”

The Chargers dropped their second Sunset game Jan. 28 when they were upended in a close game by visiting Los Alamitos, 67-58. Junior point guard Gianna Luna hit four three-point shots and led the Chargers in scoring with 19 points to go with five rebounds and three assists. Kwok hit three three-pointers and scored 15 points with three rebounds, and senior shooting guard Justine Modde hit a pair of three-pointers and had 13 points and seven rebounds.

•The Griffins head the Sunset League and went to 7-0 Tuesday by winning 82-16 at Fountain Valley. The Barons (0-7 league) also fell to visiting Newport Harbor, 42-29, in a Jan. 28 league game.

Huntington Beach, ranked No. 5 in CIF-SS Division 1A, climbed to 5-2 in the Sunset League and won their 20th game in improving to 20-5 overall by dominating host Newport Harbor, 62-26. Junior forward Frankie Wade-Sanchez scored a game-high 16 points, junior guard Kaylyn Nakaji was next with 15 points, and senior guard Sammy Gray had 11 points for the Oilers.

Huntington and Marina met in a Water vs. Oil game for the second time in less than a month and as was the case in the first meeting, Huntington emerged victorious Friday. Gray netted a game-best 24 points, Wade-Sanchez had 17 points and Nakaji 16 points, in a 78-38 Oilers victory.

Mary Dishoian and Jamira Velasquez scored 10 and nine points, respectively, for the Vikings.

Ocean View put its Golden West League record at 5-2 by rolling to a 53-21 win Tuesday at Loara. Junior point guard Jackie Moss led the scoring with 18 points and also had seven rebounds, and senior guard Danelle Almiranez scored 11 points for the Seahawks.

Ocean View had climbed into a tie for second place with Segerstrom by taking down the visiting Jaguars Friday, 56-45. Senior guard/forward Treasure Robinson paced the win with 19 points and nine rebounds.

The two wins put Ocean View, ranked No. 13 in CIF-SS Division 3A, at 13-8 overall.

In Sunset League games at 7 p.m. Thursday, Edison and Huntington will break the second-place tie when the teams meet at Edison, and Fountain Valley hosts Marina. In a 5:30 p.m. Golden West League game Friday, Ocean View hosts Orange.
