Ocean View High took a step closer to claiming an undisputed Golden West League boys’ basketball championship by posting another runaway victory Friday.

The Seahawks took their league record to 8-0 and gained no worse than a share of the league title by taking care of outmanned Orange. The Seahawks dominated from start to finish in polishing off the visiting Panthers, 72-33.

Senior guard Zamir Kelly led 10 Seahawks in scoring with 19 points to go along with two assists and two steals. Senior forward Andrew Reynolds had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Paul Head finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists, senior forward Christian Anderson had 10 points and eight rebounds, senior forward Jordan Petty six points and four rebounds, and sophomore guard Bryson Betti three points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists.

The victory kept Ocean View two games in front of second-place Loara, who the Seahawks have swept (2-0). They had an opportunity Wednesday to sew up an outright title when they traveled to face rival Westminster (the score wasn’t available at press time), and Friday complete their league season with a 7 p.m. home game with Santa Ana.

Ocean View, ranked No. 11 in CIF Southern Section Division 3A, upped its overall record to 21-4 with its 10th consecutive victory.

The win over Orange added to Ocean View’s dominance of their league rivals this year. Through their first eight league games, the Seahawks have won each league contest by no fewer than 30 points (a 91-61 win Jan. 27 over Westminster), and have beaten league foes by an average of 36 points a game.

“The one thing we’ve been preaching to our guys is to stay focused,” Ocean View co-head Coach Tim Walsh said. “The goal is to control our effort which is something we stress every single day. We’ve been up and down in that regard but tonight (against Orange), we played with focus and I thought we performed well.”

“One thing we’ve done really well in league is that we have been dominating the boards,” Co-head Coach Roger Holmes said. “We’ve also been shooting the ball really well from three-point range. In league, as a team we’ve hit around 40% of our three-point shots.”

•When Sunset League games were completed Friday, Los Alamitos had an outright championship in hand. The Griffins won (52-45) at Newport Harbor and, coupled with Huntington Beach’s 55-52 victory over visiting Edison, the two outcomes gave them an undisputed title.

Both Edison and Newport Harbor were two games behind Los Alamitos in the league standings heading into Friday’s action. The Griffins entered the week with a three-game edge in the standings with two games to play.

“Los Al is undefeated in Sunset League for a reason,” Huntington Coach Billy Thompson said. “We give credit to them because they come out and played well on their Senior Night. Our goal is to move on and finish the season strong against Fountain Valley (Thursday).”

“This was a tremendous win for our program,” Thompson said. “To get a win against Edison on our Senior Night was exciting to watch.”

“Much better effort on defense from our previous game (Huntington Beach) led to some easy baskets,” Edison Coach Rich Boyce said. “Our ‘D’ was the main factor.”

Marina collected a 50-39 home win Tuesday over Newport Harbor (No. 8, CIF-SS Division 2AA). Vikings senior guard Braden Meyers hit four three-point shots and led the scoring with 12 points. Junior guard Chance Sommerville had three three-point shots and scored 11 points, senior forward Buzz Stafford had his second consecutive 10 points and 12 rebounds performance, and freshman forward Jakob Alamudun nine points and 10 rebounds.

Marina improved to 2-7 in league (fifth place) and 13-12 overall.

“We had a great defensive night, Newport had zero threes, and we won all the hustle plays and really are learning what sharing the ball can do for our offense,” Marina Coach Nick Racklin said.

Marina previously earned a 65-60 overtime road win Friday at Fountain Valley. Meyers again hit four three-pointers to top the scoring with 18 points. Alamudun had 18 points and seven rebounds, Sommerville (three three-pointers) 14 points, and Stafford 10 points and 12 rebounds.
