Edison High and Marina went into the win column Tuesday in Sunset League softball action.

Edison’s win came at the expense of Huntington Beach. The Chargers’ 3-1 home victory was their first in league play, and the loss was the first in league and only second, overall, for the Oilers who came into the matchup ranked third in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Pitcher Kiana Pancino’s standout performance helped Edison improve to 1-2 in league and 11-7 overall. The Stanford-commit struck out five and allowed only three hits in running her record to 9-5.

Hannah Horton had two RBIs, Dani Votendahl hit a solo home run, and Aislinn Martin and Rachel Abboud scored for the Chargers.

“We fired on all cylinders from run production and defense, to outstanding pitching,” Edison Coach Kim Ensey said. “Kiana (Pancino) pitched one of her best career games against a stacked lineup and our team backed her up.”

Callie Saccacio had a pinch-hit home run which accounted for Huntington’s only run. Pitcher Ivy Davis went six innings and gave up one run on three hits. Alyssa Horeczko suffered the loss

The Oilers, who host a key league game Thursday against second-ranked Los Alamitos, fell to 2-1 in league and 16-2 overall after having their 12-game winning streak snapped. They had scored no fewer than five runs in a game during the 12-game streak.

Huntington previously overpowered Newport Harbor April 14, 14-1.

Los Alamitos won, 10-2, against Newport Harbor Tuesday to improve to 3-0 in league.

“We were just off all game long,” Huntington Coach Jeff Forsberg said. “Not sure if it was the a result of the hectic schedule and pace we were playing, but that contributed along with a great pitched game by Kiana Pancino. She kept us guessing all afternoon and we had no answer for her. (Ivy) Davis did a great job keeping us in it but we could not string anything together. We will learn from it and come back Thursday with extra determination.”

Marina won its second-straight Sunset game by defeating visiting Fountain Valley Tuesday. Julia Carreon homered, Justine Coonis had a single, and winning pitcher Amber Baldwin (7-11) struck out five and gave up four hits for the Vikings who upped their league record to 2-1 and overall mark to 8-12.

The Vikings had earned their first league victory April 14 by winning, 6-3, at Edison. Shayla Thomas hit a two-run home run and walked three times, Malia Temple hit a three-run homer, and Baldwin struck out six and gave up five hits in gaining her sixth pitching win.
