All-Star players in spotlight
Local senior prep softball and baseball players have been selected to compete in the Orange County All-Star Softball and Baseball Games next Tuesday.
The girls’ All-Star Games start at 4 p.m. at Bill Barber Park in Irvine. Six local players, representing Huntington Beach and Edison, are on the Blue Sox roster. Huntington Beach Coach Jeff Forsberg is part of the Blue Sox coaching staff.
The boys’ All-Star Game starts at 7 p.m. at Glover Stadium in Anaheim. Fountain Valley Coach Deric Yanagisawa will lead the South team whose coaching staff includes Huntington Beach Coach Benji Medure.

Orange County All-Star Baseball Game
(7 p.m., Glover Stadium)
Deric Yanagisawa, who once played in the All-Star Game, will coach the South against the North.
“It’s an honor to be a part of this game,” he said. “I’m lucky to have played in this game in 1994 and now, I get to coach in it.
“It’s awesome to see all of the great players around the county. It’s nice to be on the same side as them, for once. It was a difficult choice to pick the team because the selections had to be in so soon. I know there are deserving players that were left off and I apologize. However, the players that were chosen also deserve to play in this game.”
Four local players, representing Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Edison and Ocean View, are on the South roster. Pitcher Riley Ohl of Marina is on the North roster.
A fifth player, Dominic Abbadessa of Huntington Beach, was selected to the South roster but will not play due to a broken ankle, Yanagisawa said.
“This is the premier All-Star game for seniors in our area,” Yanagisawa said. “Please come out and support them and enjoy watching them play in their last high school baseball game. All of the participants deserve to be here and they have had a positive impact on high school baseball programs.”
