UC Riverside falls to Texas Tech

UC Riverside proved stubborn before losing a season opener, 68-56, Saturday to Texas Tech at Lubbock, Texas.

Trailing, 35-31, at halftime, the Highlanders got within 45-44 on Sean Cunningham’s jumper with 13:12 left before the Red Raiders went on a 17-3 run.

Martin Zeno scored 19 points for Texas Tech. Sean Cunningham scored 15 points and Larry Cunningham added 13 for Riverside, which didn’t help its cause with 27 turnovers.

Brigham Young 74, at Long Beach State 34 -- New Coach Dan Monson’s 49ers shot 19.1%, including two of 22 on three-point attempts, in losing to the Cougars in their season opener.

Lee Cummard scored 15 points for Brigham Young.

Andrew Fleming scored 11 points for Long Beach State.

at Cal State Northridge 96, Chicago State 85 -- Jonathan Heard scored 19 of his career-high 29 points in the second half, and Calvin Chitwood had 22 points and a career-best 18 rebounds to lead the Matadors in the opener for both teams.

Chicago State’s David Holston scored 20 of his 29 points in the first 10 minutes but fouled out with 6:44 left.

UC Santa Barbara 79, Harvard 61 -- Alex Harris had 24 points and seven rebounds to help the Gauchos (2-0) turn a three-point halftime lead into a rout of the Crimson (0-2) in the round-robin Basketball Travelers Classic at Palo Alto.

at Northern Iowa 62, Cal Poly 55 -- Eric Coleman had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Panthers (2-0), who made 21 of 25 free throws. Matt Hanson had 15 points for Cal Poly (0-2).
