They’ll try to hold that line

The thin powder blue line had more moments of concern Tuesday.

Defensive end Korey Bosworth was on the sideline, testing a left ankle injury. Defensive tackle Brigham Harwell was having an injured left arm examined. Guard Scott Glicksberg was in and out of drills because of a sore shoulder.

The hopes UCLA harbor for success this season required one absolute ingredient: health.

The Bruins have already lost tight end Logan Paulsen to a broken foot. Wide receiver Marcus Everett is still rehabilitating a dislocated toe. And tailback Kahlil Bell is looking more and more doubtful for this week because of a high ankle sprain.

“Depth has been and is a concern,” Coach Rick Neuheisel said. “We have to live with our youngsters and keep grooming them to go in.”

Still, Neuheisel admitted, “If we take on more water than we did in the first game, it will become much more of a problem.”

Bosworth and Harwell sat out the last part of practice, though Neuheisel said both would be ready to play against Brigham Young on Saturday.

Said Neuheisel: “Knowing the Bosworth boys as I know them, it would have to be an amputation for them not to play.”

Harwell, Neuheisel said, “has a bruised elbow. He’ll be fine.”

The Bruins can absorb injuries more readily on the defensive side, as “our front seven is deep,” defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker said, adding, “We have some talented young guys. They just don’t have experience.”

The offensive front is another matter. Glicksberg will play Saturday, but said he tweaked his shoulder. “It’s going to be sore. I dislocated it last season. But it’s nothing I can’t work around.”

Line coach Bob Palcic has had guard Darius Savage working with the first team more this week.

“Darius and I have a real good competition,” Glicksberg said. “Coach Palcic wants to make sure Darius knows everything. At the same time, it is going to push me to want to play better.”

Tailback shuffle

If Bell is a no-go, Raymond Carter and Chane Moline are expected to share the job. But Neuheisel hopes that freshmen Aundre Dean and Johnathan Franklin can provide some answers.

Asked if the freshmen were capable of consistent play, Neuheisel said, “I’m not sure. We kind of have to get them out there and let them get their chances.”

Olson update

Quarterback Ben Olson had X-rays on his right foot Tuesday. “The doctor said it is still broken,” Olson said. “I’ll go back in two weeks and have him look at it again.”
