USC gets run over by Arizona State

After getting blown out by UCLA in its Pac-12 Conference opener, USC had a chance to regroup in preparation for games this week against the Arizona schools.

Junior Byron Wesley said the Trojans went through some of their best practices of the season.

Not much changed, however, in terms of results.

Arizona State easily defeated USC, 79-60, on Thursday night at the Galen Center.

It was a season low in points for a USC program that was supposed to be energized by the up-tempo, high-flying style that helped put Coach Andy Enfield on the map at Florida Gulf Coast.

But the Trojans are not playing that style. And after winning five of six games before the start of conference play, they have suffered consecutive double-digit losses.

That doesn’t bode well for USC with top-ranked and unbeaten Arizona coming to the Galen Center on Sunday.

“We’re still confident,” said Wesley, who scored 20 points and took a career-high 14 rebounds, adding, “We’re not scared of them. We’re looking forward to it.”

USC was coming off a 107-73 loss to UCLA at Pauley Pavilion.

Arizona State did not approach the Bruins’ offensive production, but there was no need.

Not with USC shooting 36%, making only three of 17 three-pointers and only 13 of 25 free throws.

Despite falling to 9-6 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-12, Enfield said he was proud of his team’s effort and energy early in the game.

“This is a part of a long season,” he said. “They have to come together and stay together as a team.”

USC trailed, 44-28, at halftime, made a brief push early in the second half and then watched the Sun Devils hand them their first home loss.

Wesley was a bright spot, following his 21-point, nine-rebound effort against UCLA with his fourth double-double.

USC guard Pe’Shon Howard ended a two-game scoreless drought when he made a shot with 8:39 left in the first half. But he and guard J.T Terrell, who started for the first time since the opener against Utah State, each made only three of 13 shots.

“We’re a streaky-shooting team…. I’m not going to sugar-coat it,” Enfield said. “We need our guys to be in rhythm, be open, and at times tonight we took really good shots and missed good shots.”

Arizona State center Jordan Bachynski scored 20 points, took 12 rebounds and blocked two shots for the Sun Devils, who improved to 13-3 and 2-1 in the Pac-12.

Arizona State guard Jahii Carson, the Sun Devils’ leading scorer this season, was held scoreless until 4 minutes 54 seconds remained in the first half. But his three-pointer gave the Sun Devils a 30-19 lead, and he finished with 18 points.

Shaquielle McKissic had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Jermaine Marshall had 10 points for Arizona State.
