Pac-12 record rings hollow for USC’s Marqise Lee

TUCSON — USC receiver Marqise Lee caught 16 passes for a Pac-12 Conference-record 345 yards, but he did not feel like celebrating Saturday after USC’s 39-36 loss to Arizona at Arizona Stadium.

“It’s not about the stats, I don’t care about the stats,” Lee said. “The main focus is actually winning the game.”

Lee, a sophomore, broke the record of 293 yards receiving set by Oregon State’s Mike Hass in 2004 against Boise State. He broke the USC record of 260 yards set by R. Jay Soward in 1996 against UCLA.

Lee, who required intravenous fluids at halftime, scored on touchdown pass plays of 49 and 44 yards and also had a 57-yard reception. He also had 123 yards in kickoff returns and finished with 469 all-purpose yards.

Coach Lane Kiffin likened Lee’s talents to those of former Trojans star Reggie Bush.

“I’ve only seen two skilled guys like this ever, No. 5 and No. 9,” Kiffin said. “I don’t know how you can do more than he does. He’s in [the locker room] like he lost the Super Bowl.”

Barkley records

USC quarterback Matt Barkley, who became the Pac-12’s all-time leader in touchdown passes last week, passed for a school-record 493 yards.

Barkley broke his own record of 468 yards set last season in a 48-41 victory over Arizona at the Coliseum.

Barkley threw a first-quarter touchdown pass to tight end Xavier Grimble and two scoring passes to Lee.

Barkley had two passes intercepted, one that tipped off Lee’s hands. The senior quarterback has passed for 25 touchdowns this season, with eight interceptions. He finished last season with 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Tuerk starts

Max Tuerk started in place of injured Aundrey Walker, becoming the first true freshman to start at left tackle for the Trojans.

Bruce Matthews started games as a freshman in 1979 at what was called “weak” tackle, according to USC.

Fumbled chance

USC running backs D.J. Morgan and Silas Redd rushed for 63 and 57 yards, respectively, but both lost fumbles.

Arizona failed to capitalize on Redd’s second-quarter fumble. Morgan fumbled in the third quarter, and the Wildcats drove for a touchdown that pulled them to within 28-26.

Senior Curtis McNeal, who suffered an apparent injury against Colorado, did not make the trip.

Corona connection

Arizona quarterback Matt Scott, the former Corona Centennial High standout, completed 27 of 50 passes for 369 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception.

He also rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown in 15 carries.

Receiver Austin Hill, who played at Corona Roosevelt High, caught 10 passes for 259 yards, the second most in Arizona history.

Quick hits

Former Trojans linebacker Rey Maualuga and safety Taylor Mays, now members of the Cincinnati Bengals, attended the game.
