Dave Roberts interviewed with the Dodgers last week for their vacant managerial position, according to people familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized by the team to discuss the matter.

Roberts, 43, was the bench coach of the San Diego Padres for the past two seasons. He managed the Padres for one game this year after Bud Black was fired in June.

Once a swift-footed outfielder, Roberts played in the major leagues for 10 seasons. He became an established player with the Dodgers, who acquired him leading up to the 2002 season.

Roberts was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 2004. He is probably best-known for his steal for them in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series that year. With the Red Sox trailing the series, three games to zero, and the game, 4-3, Roberts pinch ran in the ninth inning and stole second base. He later scored a run that sent the game into extra innings. The Red Sox went on to win the game, the series, and, evetually, the World Series.

Roberts joined the Padres coaching staff in 2011 as their first base coach.
