It’s a pain-free initial return for Dodgers’ Hanley Ramirez

So the good news on the return of Hanley Ramirez?

No oblique ache Sunday.

“No pain,” he said.

Which just about wrapped up the good news. Otherwise, Ramirez was shaky on the field and hitless in three at-bats. He looked a lot like a guy who hadn’t played in more than two weeks.

“I thought he looked a little rusty at the plate for the most part,” said Manager Don Mattingly.

Though Ramirez has been dealing with several nagging injuries this season, this was the first time he went on the disabled list. He’s also battled thumb, calf and shoulder injuries. The shoulder, in particular, remains of concern with him at shortstop.

In the third inning Sunday he fielded a routine grounder from the Mets’ Juan Lagares and fired a sidearm throw that forced Adrian Gonzalez to stretch wide of first and miss. It was initially ruled an error on Ramirez, but later changed to Gonzalez.

The Dodgers are off Monday and Thursday, so Ramirez will initially be eased back, even of playing every day.

“I think that was part of the plan,” Ramirez said.

The Dodgers could very much use a healthy Ramirez. He was their biggest, most feared bat a year ago. Thus far this season he is hitting .274 with 12 homers, 27 doubles and 58 RBIs.

The Dodgers have 30 games left, so if there is still time for him to round into form, the positive news will still have to be more than good health.
