Kevin Correia makes an early exit in Dodgers’ 11-3 loss to Mets

The Dodgers tried their latest emergency starter again Sunday, and safe to say the results were less than satisfactory. Closer to when-does-this-end material.

Kevin Correia, who struggled but won his last start for the Dodgers after being acquired a week ago, struggled and lost Sunday.

Correia went three memorable innings in the Dodgers’ 11-3 loss to the Mets, who acted like they wanted to exercise almost three years of frustration (2-13) against the Dodgers in one warm afternoon.

To further buoy their day, the Mets turned their first triple play in four years when Yasiel Puig suffered a brain cramp and tried to score from second as Matt Kemp bounced into a double play. Puig was easily thrown out at the plate.

Correia retired the Mets in order in the first, and then went screaming downhill. The Mets scored twice in the second and five times in the third. During one 12-batter stretch, the Mets had eight hits and were on the positive side of a Dodgers’ error. Oh, yeah, three of those hits were home runs, and none of the cheap variety.

In his three innings, Correia (7-14) allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits. In his first start for the Dodgers, on Aug. 11, Correia lasted six innings, allowing one run on four hits, but picked up the victory in the Dodgers’ 6-2 win over the Atlanta Braves.

The Dodgers have off-days Monday and Thursday this week, so at best the team could skip his turn. But with Ryu due to come off the disabled list in five days, Sunday easily could prove Correia’s last start for some time.

The Dodgers actually scored first when Adrian Gonzalez doubled then scored on a Matt Kemp single in the first, but they did little else against 41-year-old Bartolo Colon during his six innings.

By the end of the third, the Mets were up 7-1 and that was your ballgame.

Correia gave up three mammoth home runs. Travis d’Arnaud hit a towering, three-run shot that went three-fourths up the right-field pavilion in the second inning. Lucas Duda smacked a two-run blast in the third inning followed by Ruben Tejada’s homer three at-bats later.

Just for fun, Duda added another home run off Jamey Wright in the ninth.

Gonzalez followed his five-RBI performance Saturday by going three for three, with two doubles for the Dodgers.
