Carlos Marmol accepts minor league assignment with Dodgers

DENVER -- Recently acquired reliever Carlos Marmol has accepted a minor-league assignment with the Dodgers.

The concession was the latest made by Marmol to join the Dodgers, who acquired him in a trade with the Chicago Cubs this week.

Marmol had to waive his limited no-trade clause for the trade to go through. The Dodgers were on the list of teams to which he could block a deal.

Marmol then consented to being placed on outright waivers, which he had to clear to be sent to the minor leagues. Once he made it through waivers, Marmol had to agree to go to triple-A Albuquerque. As a player who broke into the major leagues in 2006, Marmol had the necessary service time to refuse a minor league assignment.

Marmol is at the Dodgers’ spring training complex in Arizona working with minor league pitching coordinator Rafael Chaves. After a few days, he will report to Albuquerque.

The Dodgers view Marmol as a reclamation project. He posted a 5.86 earned-run average in 31 games with the Cubs and was designated for assignment last week.
