Dodgers salute Todd Helton before his final game

The Dodgers just completed a nice tribute to Colorado’s Todd Helton, who was starting the final game of his 16-year career Sunday.

Helton ranks fifth in all-time games played at first. He retires as only the second player (Stan Musial is the other) to finish with at least 2,500 hits, 550 doubles, 350 home runs and a career batting average of over .315. Selective numbers maybe, but still impressive.

The Dodgers showed a 2½-minute video tribute to Helton, with Vin Scully doing the presentation.

“On behalf of all those Dodgers pitchers whom you’ve mistreated for so many years, have a wonderful life after baseball,” Scully said.

Helton, 40, received a standing ovation from the early-arriving crowd. The Dodgers also stood outside their dugout and saluted Helton.

Helton was originally scheduled to bat sixth Sunday, but the Rockies switched and put him at third, where he had spent most of his career.

The Dodgers presented Helton with a silver microphone, autographed by Scully.
