USC’s Marqise Lee voted Pac-12 offensive player of the year

Three UCLA football players and two from USC were first-team All-Pac-12 Conference selections, it was announced Monday.

USC receiver Marqise Lee was chosen offensive player of the year. Trojans center Khaled Holmes and UCLA offensive lineman Xavier Su’a-Filo, linebacker Anthony Barr and punter Jeff Locke also were first-team selections in voting by coaches.

Oregon and Stanford each placed five players on the first team, Oregon State four.

Lee, a sophomore, has 112 receptions for 1,680 yards, both conference records. He has 15 touchdowns and is averaging 215.7 all-purpose yards a game.

Lee was the only player on every first-team ballot. He was also selected to the second team as a return specialist.

Lee is a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, presented to the nation’s top receiver, and is regarded as a contender for the Heisman Trophy.

Other award winners: Arizona State tackle Will Sutton, defensive player of the year; Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, top freshman on offense; USC tackle Leonard Williams, top freshman on defense; and Stanford’s David Shaw, coach of the year for the second consecutive season.

Shaw guided the Cardinal to a 10-2 record and is preparing for the Pac-12 Conference championship game Friday against UCLA, which is 9-3 under first-year Coach Jim Mora.

Mariota, a redshirt freshman, was the only freshman selected to the first or second teams. No freshman had been selected as the first-team quarterback since USC’s Todd Marinovich in 1989.

Arizona’s Matt Scott was the second-team quarterback.

USC’s Matt Barkley, who established conference career records for touchdown passes, completions and total offense, was among dozens of players named honorable mention, as was UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley.

UCLA’s second-team selections included running back Johnathan Franklin, offensive lineman Jeff Baca, defensive lineman Datone Jones and special-teams player David Allen.

USC receiver Robert Woods, defensive end Morgan Breslin, cornerback Nickell Robey and safety T.J. McDonald were second-team selections.
