Baseball: Kyle Nicol strikes out 14 in Burroughs’ championship win

Burroughs Coach Craig Sherwood used to be the top assistant to Crespi Coach Scott Muckey, who died over the weekend at age 63.

So imagine how proud Muckey would have been watching Burroughs and ace pitcher Kyle Nicol strike out 14 batters to lift the Indians to a 1-0 win over Harvard-Westlake in the championship game of the Easton tournament on Wednesday night. Nicol allowed just two hits. Burroughs (5-0) got a walk-off single from Jason Whaley in the seventh.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 8, Cleveland 0: The Knights won their division of the Southern California Invitational, handing Cleveland (8-1) its first defeat. Hunter Greene and Issac Amador combined on a one-hitter. Greene also had three hits. Michael Whiteside, Justin Rorick and Logan Pollack added two hits apiece.

Santa Barbara 2, Righetti 0: Kevin Gowdy, perhaps the best pitcher in Southern California, opened by throwing a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and zero walks. The UCLA signee was supported by a two-run home run from John Jensen. Arizona commit Matt Sauer allowed three hits in four innings.

Etiwanda 8, Paloma Valley 7: The Eagles scored two runs in the eighth. Tyler Freeman had two his and three RBIs.

San Marino 5, Brentwood 0: The Titans (6-0) won their division of the Southern California Invitational with a 5-0 win over Brentwood. JT McDonnnell allowed two hits in six innings, striking out three and walking one.

JSerra 4, Damien 2: The No. 1-ranked Lions stayed unbeaten behind Lyle Lin, who had a double and single. Damien got 10 hits but struggled to get a key hit. Harrison Spohn and Isaiah Page each had two hits for Damien. JSerra advances to Newport Elks tournament final.

Calabasas 7, Taft 0: Parker Brahms threw six shutout innings and hit a home run for the Coyotes. Grant Nechak hit a two-run home run.

Simi Valley 3, Loyola 1: Cal Hodgins went four for four to lead Simi Valley. Owen Sharts got out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh to pick up the save.

Chatsworth 15, Camarillo 2: Max Mehlbaum had a bases clearing double, Daniel Zakosek added a two-run double and Josh Garcia hit a home run to support the pitching of Tommy Palomera.

Birmingham 5, Thousand Oaks 4: Isaac Meza got the walk-off two-run single in the seventh inning for the Patriots. Edgar Rivas threw four scoreless innings.

El Camino Real 11, Moorpark 3: Jake Baer had a three-run triple and Matt Cassin, Dylan Hirsch and Eric Yang added two hits apiece to lead the Conquistadores. Jeremy Polon picked up the win.

Agoura 14, Palmdale 2: Ben Baird had a triple, double, single and four RBIs and Jake Benun and Michael Radin added three hits each for the Chargers.

Valencia 10, Alemany 2: Chase Farrell picked up the win.

Oaks Christian 4, Sun Valley Poly 2: Jack Aldrich threw the complete game. Dane Morrow and Adam Kerner had two hits apiece for the Lions (4-1).

Mission Viejo 6, Capistrano Valley Christian 1: Tanner Bibee threw six innings with six strikeouts and also hit a grand slam.

Capistrano Valley 1, Foothill 0: Jeremy Tyler struck out six and allowed three hits in 6 2/3 innings. Capistrano Valley pitchers have allowed one run in three games. Connor Martin went three for three.

Hemet 4, La Palma Kennedy 1: Dylan King had a two-run home run.

Orange Lutheran 9, Tustin 6: Zachary Lew and Zach Busalacchi each had three hits for the Lancers. Anthony Walters had three hits and two RBIs for Great Oak.

Eastvale Roosevelt 6, North 1: Manny Galvan had two hits for North.

Esperanza 6, Riverside Poly 2: Hayden Nix and Josh Sedoff each contributed two hits for Esperanza.

Great Oak 6, Valley Center 1: Worth Planer finished with two hits and two RBIs.

Saugus 12, Malibu 0: Freshman Tony Jacob Jr. threw a one-hitter. Tyler Grissom had three hits and three RBIs.

Oak Park 8, Desert Christian 0: Sophomore Jonah Scott threw a no-hitter.

Culver City 6, Oxnard Pacifica 2: Michael Netzel went three for three with two triples.

Glendora 10, Ontario Christian 2: Justin Gonzales didn’t allow any earned runs in five innings and Jake Bryant had four RBIs, including a three-run home run.

Sylmar 4, Arleta 3: Angel Hernandez came through with the game-winning double in the eighth. Andrew Ochoa had a two-run home run.

Santa Monica 8, Huntington Park 0: The Vikings improved to 4-1.

Campbell Hall 12, Nordhoff 0: James Dekay struck out eight and threw a two-hitter. Naar Sahakian had a home run and two RBIs.

Einstein 7, Milken 6: Eric Hovsepian came up with the save to help Einstein improve to 4-1.

South Hills 6, Warren 0: South Hills tuned up for a Thursday night doubleheader against Mater Dei with a shutout. Zach Bromstead threw six shutout innings.

Charter Oak 5, Crescenta Valley 0: Andre Henson threw a no-hitter.

Banning 4, Palisades 0: Ivan Martinez struck out 11 with zero walks for Banning. He also had three hits and two RBIs.

Maranatha 12, La Canada 1: Paul McAllister struck out nine in five innings and sophomore Ben Guess went three for three.

L.A. Roosevelt 5, Glendale 2: Kenny Gallegos picked up the win in relief. Gabriel Jimenez had two hits.
