The conventional wisdom was that Eyassu Worku of Los Alamitos would take the final shot on Friday night to deliver victory for the Griffins in their Sunset League first-place battle against host Edison.

Worku had scored 31 points. The Griffins called timeout to set up the final play. They were down, 54-53. The clocking was winding down . . . 23, 22, 21. Worku got the ball but Edison double teamed him and he passed it to a wide open Pepe Garcia.

Garcia launched a shot from the right wing. It hit the rim, bounced up, went around and dropped through with 19 seconds left. The three-pointer proved to be the winning basket as Los Alamitos held off Edison, 56-54.

Worku, a UC Irvine signee, was magnificent in the second half in helping Los Alamitos (19-3, 6-0) come back after falling behind, 38-30.

Randall Walker led Edison (18-5, 4-2) with 19 points. Nate Matthews added 16 points. David Atencio had 13 points.

Los Alamitos fans charged onto the court when the buzzer sounded.
