Fast start has been noticed

The Ducks changed their logo for the 2006-07 season but it may be time to consider wearing something else on the front of their jerseys.

A bull’s-eye perhaps.

That’s what a franchise-best 12-1-4 start gets you. The Ducks are officially a target and have taken notice of opposing teams using the words “measuring stick” in reference to their matchups with them.

It wasn’t long ago when the shoe was on the other foot.

“If you had said that 10 years ago, it’d be a different story,” cracked Teemu Selanne, a veteran of some not-so-good teams.

The Ducks firmly understand they are no longer being overlooked.

“But I think that’s a good challenge for us,” Selanne said. “It makes sure that you show up every night.”

The Ducks took their first loss in regulation Friday night in Calgary after opening the season with points in an NHL-record 16 consecutive games. The mood in the locker room was more reflective than somber, but Coach Randy Carlyle said he detected another emotion.

“I think they were upset,” Carlyle said. “That was my read on it. They were upset we lost the hockey game.”

Selanne concurred.

“I think that’s how it should be,” he said. “Any time this team can’t take two points, we have to be disappointed.”

If there was a silver lining, Selanne said, it was that they can put the focus back on playing good hockey.

“Wherever we went, people were always talking about it,” he said. “To be honest, we’re all proud of what we did. But that wasn’t the goal we had. The goal has about been getting better.”

Carlyle said his decision to pull Ilya Bryzgalov after the first period Friday was an in-game call and not a reflection of his confidence in the backup goaltender. Bryzgalov, who gave up two goals in three shots, has been removed twice in five starts this season.

“I just looked at the situation and I think we needed a change and made that decision,” Carlyle said. “That’s a coach’s prerogative. I felt we needed some sort of a change. I did it for the other 20 guys.

“That’s the way it is. I don’t carry any grudges about it. I’ve moved forward. As I’ve stated, we have a 1A and 1B.”
