Dodgers sign pitcher Chad Billingsley to three-year contract extension

The Dodgers confirmed Tuesday that they signed starting pitcher Chad Billingsley to a three-year contract extension with a club option for a fourth year, which will keep the right-hander with the team at least through 2014.

Terms weren’t announced, but people familiar with the pact said Billingsley, 26, will be guaranteed $35 million from 2012 through 2014.

Billingsley will earn $9 million in 2012, $11 million in 2013 and $12 million in 2014. The contract also includes a $14-million club option for 2015; if the Dodgers decline the option, they would owe Billingsley a $3-million buyout.

If the option is picked up, the deal would be worth a total of $46 million.

The deal includes a limited no-trade clause that allows Billingsley to block trades to 10 teams. Billingsley already was under contract for the upcoming season for $6.275 million.

Billingsley’s agent, Dave Stewart, said he initially told Billingsley that he thought he should wait until the end of the season to explore an extension but that his client told him he wanted to get a deal done as soon as possible.

“I enjoy being part of” the Dodgers “and I’m happy to be a part of it for a few more years,” Billingsley said.

Billingsley, who is scheduled to start the Dodgers’ second game of the season Friday against the San Francisco Giants, was the Dodgers’ first-round draft pick in 2003. He was 12-11 with a 3.57 earned-run average last year in his fourth full season with the club and has a career mark of 59-41.

“It’s a blessing for this opportunity to come my way and I’m very fortunate,” he said, adding that he also hoped to use part of the raise for more charity work “if I can make a difference in other people’s lives.”

Garland update

Starting pitcher Jon Garland, recovering from a strained oblique muscle in his torso, said he felt fine after throwing about 30 pitches in a bullpen session Monday.

Garland said he also “sneezed today and didn’t feel anything,” which he took as a good sign. Garland, who is expected to miss his first one or two starts this season, said he planned to throw again Wednesday.
