Santa Ana Mater Dei rolls to a 28-21 victory over Anaheim Servite

There was a video tribute to Santa Ana Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson on Friday night before the Monarchs’ Trinity League opener against rival Anaheim Servite at Angel Stadium.

Quarterbacks Matt Barkley and Matt Leinart offered praise to the veteran coach known for his fiery pregame and halftime pep talks. Then Rollinson, his voice cracking with emotion while addressing fans on the public address system, shouted, “Rock ‘n’ roll, baby!”

His players responded by scoring the game’s first 21 points, two on touchdown catches of 73 and eight yards by Jonathan Lockett. In the end, Servite couldn’t recover and fell to the No. 2-ranked Monarchs, 28-21.

Justin Allen rushed for 244 yards in 28 carries and scored two touchdowns. Lockett caught six passes for 145 yards. Malik McMorris contributed two sacks and picked up two key first downs in the fourth quarter to help the Monarchs (6-0) run out the clock.

“Yeah, I fell apart pretty good,” Rollinson said. “It was a hard-earned victory. My hats off to Servite. They battled. That’s what this game is about. I feel honored, I feel blessed. It doesn’t get any better than this.”

Quarterback Travis Waller, despite being sacked six times, did his best to keep Servite (3-3) in the game. He rushed for 100 yards and passed for 184 yards. His two-yard touchdown run with 4:10 left got the Friars within seven points. But before a crowd of 11,352, Mater Dei didn’t let Servite get the ball again.

What a night it was in the Trinity League. Orange Lutheran improved to 6-0 with a 29-13 win over JSerra. And top-ranked St. John Bosco rolled to a 56-12 win over Santa Margarita. Josh Rosen ran for four touchdowns and completed 21 of 26 passes for 245 yards and one touchdown.

Big day for the Kalil family

Frank Kalil, an assistant coach for Servite, was scheduled to board a plane Saturday morning for Minnesota, where Sunday will be a special day for the Kalil family.

His sons, Ryan, 28, and Matt, 24, standout offensive linemen at Servite and USC, will be opponents for the first time ever on the same field. Ryan is the starting center for the Carolina Panthers. Matt is the starting left tackle for the Minnesota Vikings.

Adding to the excitement is that his daughter, Danielle, will sing the national anthem.

The brothers haven’t stayed quiet leading up to the battle.

“They always talk trash,” Frank said. “Ryan usually gets the best of Matt. He’s a three-year All-Pro and tells his brother, ‘You’ve only been All-Pro once.’”

Don’t look for Frank to do any cheering.

“If the Vikings score, I’m going to be cool about it. If the Panthers score, I’m going to be cool about it,” he said.
