Valencia asserts its command in Foothill League

In the Santa Clarita Valley, where Newhall Hart and Canyon Country Canyon have been football powers, it’s another school that keeps winning Foothill League championships.

Valencia (7-2, 4-0) clinched at least a share of its fifth consecutive league title with a 24-19 upset victory over previously unbeaten Hart (8-1, 3-1) on Friday night. The Vikings had 10 sacks against a team ranked No. 1 in the Northern Division.

Only a week ago, Valencia came back from a three-touchdown deficit to defeat Canyon, 35-28. Coach Larry Muir said his players have accomplished something very rare.

“The last two weeks have been the most poised and most together team that I’ve seen,” he said. “Hart is so good, and the only way to beat them is a total team effort.”

Justin Son had 2 1/2 sacks and Jourdan Nguyen came up with the final sack against quarterback Brady White to deny the Indians a last-minute, game-winning touchdown.

Knights’ quest

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame finished its regular season with a 7-3 record and 3-1 mark in the Serra League. The Knights clinched at least a share of their 18th league title under Coach Kevin Rooney.

The seniors on the Knights finished last in the Serra League when they were freshmen.

Assistant coach Joe McNab, offering some Boston Red Sox pride, said, “Last to first — Sherman Oaks strong.”

Nine in a row

Down 21-7, unbeaten Gardena Serra (9-0, 4-0) rallied for a 35-21 victory over La Canada St. Francis (8-1, 3-1).

Boise State-bound quarterback Jalen Greene passed for three touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns.

Changing channels

Serra Coach Scott Altenberg went home Friday night to watch unbeaten Bellflower St. John Bosco on Fox Sports West and almost changed the channel because he didn’t think he was watching a high school team.

“I thought I was watching a college team,” he said. “They look huge.”

St. John Bosco is 9-0. Serra and St. John Bosco could be headed for a showdown in the CIF state championship Southern California Open Division bowl game if both teams win out.

Lots of points

Lompoc improved to 8-1 with an 80-28 win over Nipomo. It was 28-0 after the first quarter and 63-14 at halftime. The starters were pulled early in the third quarter.

Derrick Portis rushed for 248 yards and scored three touchdowns. A.J. Florez had 161 yards and two touchdowns. Austin Hayes added 175 yards and three touchdowns.

Returner sensation

Dajuan Parham of Venice returned two punts for touchdowns and had a third nullified because of a penalty in a 49-0 win over Fairfax.
