Yankees pitcher Alfredo Aceves suspended 50 games for positive drug test

New York Yankees pitcher Alfredo Aceves received a 50-game suspension from Major League Baseball following a second positive test for a “drug of abuse” while in the team’s minor-league system.

Aceves, a 31-year-old right-hander, has been pitching for the the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate. He made 10 relief appearances for the Yankees in May and June, compiling a 1-2 record with a 6.52 earned-run average.

Aceves’s suspension is effective immediately, the office of the commissioner said in a statement. Aceves, who also played with the Yankees from 2008-10 before spending the past three seasons with the Boston Red Sox, has a 31-16 record with a 3.83 ERA over his seven-year major league career.

CC Sabathia’s return to the New York Yankees’ rotation is being delayed because he had swelling in his injured right knee after making his second rehabilitation start.

Sabathia made a start for Double-A Trenton on Wednesday. He had an MRI exam on Thursday. The left-hander has been out with a degenerative cartilage problem nearly two months.

Also, the Yankees have sent third baseman Yangervis Solarte to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and replaced him with Zelous Wheeler, who will make his major league debut.

The Oakland Athletics have finalized an agreement on a 10-year extension to play at the Coliseum through the 2024 season.

The deal was approved Thursday by the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority. The deal still needs to be formally approved by the Oakland City Council and Alameda County Board of Supervisors later this month.

The deal settles all outstanding issues between the two sides, including a dispute of past rent owed by the A’s. The A’s will spend more than $10 million on a new scoreboard and the Coliseum Authority will pay for any structural improvements that will be in place by opening day 2015.
