Norman tries new cash cow

Times Staff Writer

What in the world is Greg Norman up to now?

It seems as if he has his fingers in everything.

If it’s green (golf courses), pours (wine), blocks the sun (his “sky shades”), has a brim or a collar (apparel), cooks (restaurant), grows (turf), has players (event management) or you look through it (eyewear), then you can be just about certain that Norman has a piece of it.

Now, there’s an addition. If it moos (beef), well Norman might be behind that too.

And not just any beef, mind you, but his very own Greg Norman signature brand Australian Wagyu beef.

Pronounced WAG-oo, the beef is similar to Kobe style, low in cholesterol, high in Omega 3, has less cholesterol than boneless chicken and is high in mono-unsaturated fat -- according to the company.

The Greg Norman Signature Wagyu is available at the meat counter at all 15 of California’s Bristol Farms retail stores. It’s a 350-day, grain-fed line of imported Australian Wagyu.

Jesse Shay, assistant manager at the meat counter at the Market Street location in San Francisco, said the Wagyu is a class item -- even though he had no idea that Norman actually made his name as a professional golfer, not pushing beef.

But look at it this way. With as many birdies as Norman has made, it’s surprising he isn’t selling chicken.

Trivia time

What was Paul Byrd’s uniform number with the Angels?

About Byrd. . .

Now that the Indians have fallen out of the equation, maybe Byrd will get lucky and disappear too, taking his human growth hormone controversy along with him.

If Angels fans remember Byrd for something, it’s probably this:

In the 2005 American League Championship Series, Byrd won Game 1 against the Chicago White Sox -- the only victory by the Angels in that series.

Paint your wagon?

Gilbert Arenas isn’t just an NBA player, he’s also a blogger (who isn’t?), and he ran an item recently on his teammate, former USC star Nick Young.

Arenas wrote that Young and his pal, Dominic McGuire, are practical jokers.

One day, Arenas was playing the video game “Halo” -- oh, yeah, better make that every day -- but in this particular instance, he was playing “Halo” and saw Young and McGuire sneaking around near his house armed with paintball guns. They also wore helmets and masks.

The pranksters jumped a wall and came in through the garage, but Arenas had already jumped a different wall and was out of the house.

“They were in the house looking for me, and I was across the street flattening their tires,” he wrote.

Trivia answer

Byrd wore No. 36, the same number he wore for the Indians this season.

Boo! brothers

Proving again that there is simply not enough to do in Arkansas, Razorbacks fans are voting online to figure out what Halloween costumes star running backs Darren McFadden and Felix Jones should wear to class and practice on Oct. 31.

Since they combine to average about 250 yards a game, they’re probably scary enough in uniform.

And finally

No one is going to have to introduce Stanford Coach Jim Harbaugh and Oregon State Coach Mike Riley when their football teams meet Saturday at Corvallis, Ore.

Harbaugh was the starting quarterback of the San Diego Chargers for parts of two seasons, in 1999 and 2000, when Riley was the head coach.
