Party’s over for Daly, who withdraws again

John Daly, who had withdrawn from 11 PGA Tour events the last two years, made it an even dozen Saturday morning when he withdrew from the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

Daly told tour officials he had a rib injury. Through 54 holes, Daly was tied for 75th at four-under-par 212 after rounds of 71-70-71.

Daly’s couldn’t make his 9:33 a.m. tee time in the celebrity field at the Classic Club, where he was to play in a group with actors Cheech Marin and Don Cheadle. Classic Club pro Dan Kempton filled in for Daly.

“Obviously we’d like to have him here, because this is our marquee day, when the celebrities hit the Classic Club,” tournament director Mike Milthorpe said.

Daly has been a regular this week at the Hope’s tournament parties. He attended two more tournament parties Friday night, including an after-party, and told one local reporter to ignore the fact that he was drinking. At the first party, Daly sang “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” in a duet with Alice Cooper. Eyewitnesses said Daly was helped out of the after-party by an unidentified man.

Daly, who entered the Hope on a sponsor’s exemption, is also scheduled to play in next week’s Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines on another sponsor’s exemption.

Shigeki Maruyama, who was tied for 110th after 54 holes, withdrew because of allergies.
