Dodgers rally to 4-3 win over Giants

KEY MOMENT: With one out and runners at second and third in the fifth inning, Adrian Gonzalez was struck out by Jake Peavy, his former teammate on the San Diego Padres. But Peavy’s pitch went in the dirt and squirted away from catcher Buster Posey, who retrieved it and threw out Gonzalez at first base. But as Posey delivered the ball to first, Dee Gordon bolted home from third base and scored. The run tied the score, 2-2, and the Dodgers went on to score twice more in the inning to take a 4-2 lead.

ON THE MOUND: Hyun-Jin Ryu improved to 12-5 by limiting the Giants to three runs and six hits over six innings. He struck out seven. Left-hander J.P. Howell, right-hander Brian Wilson and closer Kenley Jansen each pitched a scoreless inning to preserve a 4-3 lead. Howell, Wilson and Jansen each hadn’t pitched since Monday.

AT THE PLATE: The Dodgers ruined Jake Peavy’s debut with the Giants. Peavy, whom the Giants acquired the previous day from the Boston Red Sox, was charged with four runs (three earned) and six hits in six innings. Hanley Ramirez was two for four with a run batted in and scored a run. Matt Kemp also had two hits. Carl Crawford and Juan Uribe each drove in a run.

ON THE FARM: While on a minor league rehabilitation assignment, Erisbel Arruebarrena shoved the opposing catcher and started a violent bench-clearing ball Saturday in a triple-A game. Sunday, the Dodgers activated their $25-million Cuban shortstop from the disabled list and optioned him to Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. The primary objective of the demotion was to get Arruebarrena to a place where he could play Sunday without concerns of any further retribution. However, the move to Class A won’t allow Arruebarrena to avoid the suspension he is expected to receive.
