Fullerton Troy Wins in an Upset
Seniors Jeffrey Hsu and Greg Frenkiel played aggressively and pulled out a final-set tiebreaker that clinched Fullerton Troy’s 10-8 upset of defending champion Fullerton Sunny Hills in the Southern Section Division IV boys’ tennis final Wednesday at the Claremont Club.
Trailing, 7-5, after two rotations of the round-robin format, the second-seeded Warriors (25-3) came back to win five of the last six sets and avenge two Freeway League losses to the top-seeded Lancers.

High school tennis -- An article in Thursday’s Sports section about the Southern Section boys’ championship tennis match between two Fullerton high schools, Troy and Sunny Hills, said it was a Division IV match. In fact, it was Division II. Also, the article said Sunny Hills’ Jason Choi won two of three singles sets. Choi lost his three singles sets. In addition, the scoreboard results of the match said Troy’s Lawrence Wang lost to Choi, 6-1. Wang defeated Choi, 6-0. The results also said that Wang defeated Lewis Hong, 6-1. The score of that match was 6-3. Finally, the results said Troy’s Vim Mahader defeated Sunny Hills’ Hong, 6-0. Mahader lost to Hong, 6-0.
“Losing to them twice took all the pressure off of us,” said Hsu, who partnered with Frenkiel to win two of three sets at No. 3 doubles. With Troy leading, 9-8, in sets but trailing, 74-73, in games, Hsu and Frenkiel battled Sunny Hills’ No. 1 doubles team of Grady Shon and Meeshan Shah into the deciding tiebreaker.
Leading, 5-4, Hsu ripped a forehand passing shot down the line to set up match point. And when Shah’s forehand groundstroke floated over the baseline a few moments later, Troy had secured its second section title in three years.
Troy’s Joseph Kane and Patrick Yan set up their teammates’ clutch play by holding on for a 7-5 win over the Lancers’ No. 3 doubles team of Steve Hong and Chris Cabanilla. Jason Choi won two of three singles sets for Sunny Hills (21-2).
