Kings’ Justin Williams practices with team, hopes to be ready for playoff opener

Kings right wing Justin Williams practiced with his teammates Monday, three weeks after he dislocated his right shoulder and exited the lineup, but he wasn’t on a regular line during the session at El Segundo.

Afterward, he said the shoulder felt good but he hadn’t faced much contact and is ready for a full test in hopes he will be able to play in the Kings’ playoff opener at San Jose on Thursday.

“I’m happy we have another day. I thought we’d start Wednesday,” Williams said. “I’ll get into some more intense battling this week and we’ll go from there. Then coach and I and the training staff will make a decision on whether I can go or not.”

Williams, whose 57 points tied him with Dustin Brown for second behind Anze Kopitar’s 73 points, said tests on his shoulder showed the strength was up to par.

“I just need to get comfortable out there and not think about it and see how it progresses throughout the week,” he said. “If I go out there and I’m timid, I’m not going to do it. We’ll just take it slowly, and if it happens, great.”

Coach Terry Murray said if Williams pronounces himself ready after Tuesday’s practice, “I’m going to absolutely take a look at it and try to pencil him in somewhere.”

Ducks in net

It’s time to do goaltender triage with Ducks’ Coach Randy Carlyle heading into Wednesday night’s playoff opener against Nashville.

There is No. 1 goaltender Jonas Hiller, who has played once in two months because of vertigo.

“He seems to be improving,” Carlyle said. “We feel if the option is necessary or needed, we can go to Jonas Hiller.”

Hiller: “I’m still feeling the effects. It’s not too good right now.”

There is Ray Emery, who pushed the Ducks toward the playoffs before suffering a “lower body injury.”

“Emery was skating before practice and after practice,” Carlyle said. “We’ll see how he’s doing.”

Emery, when asked , said, “It has a little ways to go.”

That leads to Dan Ellis, who started once in 11 games before being sent out against the Kings on Friday and Saturday. He won both.

“It’s always good to build your confidence and get in a little rhythm,” Ellis said.

So where will Carlyle turn Wednesday? “I haven’t decided yet,” he said.

The Kings and Ducks will open the 2011-12 season in Europe. The Kings will face the New York Rangers at Stockholm on Oct. 7 and the Buffalo Sabres at Berlin on Oct. 8. The Ducks will play the Sabres at Helsinki, Finland, on Oct. 7 and the Rangers at Stockholm on Oct. 8. …

All Kings playoff games will air on KLAC 570. The club also reached an agreement with Clear Channel to continue airing games on KTLK 1150 the next two seasons.
