UCLA football: Brett Hundley rolls up numbers, wants to do more

Quarterback Brett Hundley had one for the books -- the record books.

His 410 yards passing in a 37-10 victory over California on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl was the third most by a UCLA quarterback and put him over 5,000 yards in two seasons. He 5,209 yards overall rank him seventh, 89 behind Troy Aikman.

His three touchdown passes gave him 41 in his career, tying him with Aikman on the UCLA all-time list. Aikman did it in 22 games. Hundley has played 19.

A satisfying evening? Hardly.

“There was a lot left out there,” Hundley said. “So we can be that much better. That’s how much I push myself, the coaches push me.”

To put it another way, it was California.

Washington State’s Connor Halliday had 521 yards passing and three touchdowns against the Bears. Ohio State backup quarterback Kenny Guiton threw for 276 yards and four touchdowns. Even Portland State quarterback Kieran McDonagh had 308 yards passing against the Bears.

Hundley said he could have been better when the Bruins drove inside the 10-yard line. Three times they settled for field goals.

“Sometimes, on goal line, there are a lot of tight situations, with fade routes and stuff like that,” Hundley said. “I missed on some timing. I missed on some throws. There are a lot of things to get better at.”

It was another step on the development path for Hundley.

“He wants to be so perfect instead of just breathing a little bit,” offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone said. “I probably yelled at him for the first quarter. No, for the first three or four quarters.”

Mazzone said Hundley is “very meticulous, very smart, very bright young man. He likes to know everything and where everything goes and sometimes I say, ‘Man, you just got to go play, just throw it to our guys, all right?’ … Instead of putting it exactly there or exactly here. That’s what makes him the good quarterback.”
