UCLA defensive end Kevin Harbour has not played all season because of a severe knee injury he suffered last spring that required surgery. But Harbour has not given up hope of playing against USC on Dec. 4, and on Wednesday, the third-year sophomore participated in selective drills in practice for the second day in a row.

“My knee is not quite the same and I’m not close to being myself yet, but it feels good,” said Harbour, who was expected to start this season.

Before the season, Coach Karl Dorrell said a goal was to have Harbour return by Halloween.

“I thought that I would have been able to return sooner, but the doctors slowed down my rehab,” said Harbour, who has added 22 pounds to his 6-foot-4 frame since his injury and weighs more than 260.

“They told me that I really should not play this season at all, but I’m still trying to show them that I can play,” he said. “It might happen.”

UCLA has stepped up its national push to promote players for postseason honors with e-mails regarding linebacker Spencer Havner, the Pacific 10 Conference leader in tackles and a semifinalist for the Butkus and Lombardi awards; running back Maurice Drew, who ranked among the national leaders in all-purpose yards most of the season; kicker Justin Medlock, a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award; punter Chris Kluwe, a Ray Guy Award semifinalist; and tight end Marcedes Lewis, a John Mackey Award candidate.
