Jordan Clarkson won’t play for Philippines in FIBA Asia Championship

Despite efforts by Jordan Clarkson and the Lakers, the team’s second-year guard will not play for the Philippine national team this month in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.

According to a statement released on the Philippine Basketball Assn.’s website, the team “was not able to beat the deadline to secure the necessary clearances on time.”

Clarkson might have been eligible to play in three early tournament games, but with the Lakers scheduled to hold their annual media day on Sept. 28 before flying to Hawaii for training camp, his NBA obligation took precedence.

According to Interaksyon.com on Saturday, Lakers executives Mitch Kupchak and Jeanie Buss spoke with Philippines national team executives Ricky Vergas and Patrick Gregorio about Clarkson’s participation in the tournament.

“There were no objections for Jordan to play for the national team long-term, but for FIBA Asia, we continue to discuss availability,” Vargas said.

Tuesday was the deadline to name the final roster, which will include former NBA player Andray Blatche.

Clarkson, whose mother is half Filipino, was drafted by the Lakers with the 46th overall selection in 2014 -- a pick purchased from the Washington Wizards for $1.8 million.

After sitting for most of the first half of the season, the Missouri guard wound up earning a spot on the NBA’s all-rookie first team.
