Lakers make Wesley Johnson signing official
The Lakers made the signing of small forward Wesley Johnson official on Monday.
“Wesley is a young, athletic player who runs the floor well and is an excellent defender,” said Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak in a prepared statement. “He’s a developing player who we think could become a good NBA player for years to come. He’s also a great kid and we’re happy to add him to our team.”
The team agreed to terms with Johnson over the weekend on a one-year deal at the veteran’s minimum salary at $916,099.
Johnson will join Nick Young at the position opened when the Lakers used their onetime amnesty to waive Metta World Peace.
Drafted in 2010 by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the fourth overall pick, Johnson was traded last summer to the Phoenix Suns.
The Lakers probably hope Johnson is a late bloomer in the NBA. Athletically he could fit in as a role player both as defender and complementary scorer.
