Racing! Finishing up the Eclipse Award picks

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa, and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we finish up our Eclipse Award picks.

Hopefully everyone had a great first day of the year, but now it’s back to work for some of you. Confession up top, I watched college football all day, not the horses. Well, I do record Santa Anita every day and watch the races later.

The day of the two semifinals is the best viewing day in college football. And, I also got to see my alma mater, University of Central Florida, stay undefeated and beat Auburn in the Peach Bowl.

OK, with that out of the way, the rest of my Eclipse Award picks.

But first, I’m going to change my third-place vote in the horse-of-the-year category and remove Collected and put in West Coast. I completely forgot about the disappointing third Collected ran in the San Antonio last Tuesday. Should have looked at the updated PPs.

And, I also have to correct the numbers I had on Evin Roman for top apprentice jockey. It’s 150 wins, not the blown-up figure I used. Still, almost double anyone else.

Older dirt male: Well, this is another easy one because wherever you put horse of the year, you usually have to find a spot in a lesser category for them. So, I’ll duplicate my earlier horse-of-the-year picks with (1) Gun Runner on top. Won last four races including Breeders’ Cup Classic. (2) Arrogate hated Del Mar but that doesn’t mean he didn’t earn tons of respect by winning the Pegasus and Dubai World Cup. (3) Collected, who finished behind Gun Runner in the Classic and won his previous four races.

Older dirt female: This is a tough category to fill out the top three. You pretty much have to give your first-place vote to (1) Forever Unbridled, who ran only three races but won all of the them including the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Now, for the remaining two spots, it comes down to Stellar Wind, Songbird and Vale Dori. Stellar Wind had three Grade 1 wins before a dreadful eighth in the Distaff. Songbird had two wins and a loss to Forever Unbridled before retiring. Vale Dori reeled off four wins in a row before finishing second twice to Stellar Wind. All good horses. I’ll go, (2) Stellar Wind and (3) Vale Dori.

Male sprinter: First and second are pretty easy in this one. (1) Roy H won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and four other races, with just one second-place finish. (2) Imperial Hint was second in the BC Sprint, winning his other four races. And, (3) Stormy Liberal gets the third-place vote based on winning the BC Turf Sprint and four other races.

Female sprinter: This is a tough one. A lot of good sprinters, some of which do well at non-sprints. So, I’ll bear the brunt of criticism for being a homer and go with (1) Unique Bella by virtue of winning her first Grade 1 on Dec. 26. Other than that, she won four of five graded stakes, but the fifth was a seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. I’ll go (2) Ami’s Mesa with the runner-up spot, winning four races and getting nosed out of the win in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint. Finally, I’ll go with BC Filly and Mare Sprint winner (3) Bar Of Gold for the final spot. I view 66-1 shots as more of a fluke, that’s why they are 66-1.

Three-year-old male: Another easy one for me. In the absence of any Triple Crown traction, (1) West Coast was last year’s Arrogate in that he developed late after missing the TC races. He won six of nine races, including the Travers and was third in the Breeders’ Cup Classic against older horses. (2) Always Dreaming won the Kentucky Derby and that should be worth something. Also won the Florida Derby. Finally (3) Battle Of Midway for a win in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and four other lesser races. He finished third in the Derby.

Three-year-old female: I’m going to go with (1) Abel Tasman first despite the disgusting way the China Horse Club changed trainers, even though in reality it’s never a bad move to go to Bob Baffert’s barn. If you forgot, Simon Callaghan had the horse ripped from him when the jockey mistakenly didn’t wear the CHC silks. Then, in the Kentucky Oaks presser after the race, the CHC apologist/cheerleader (guess I won’t be getting any interviews from him) refused to talk about it. OK, don’t penalize the horse for their owners. Three Grade 1 wins and a second in the Breeder’s Cup Distaff should get you an Eclipse. Then I went (2) Unique Bella and (3) Paradise Woods. Sorry, Elate.

Two-year-old male: This will be the most controversial of all categories and I’m going (1) Bolt D’Oro as my pick and don’t try and talk me off it. He was nothing short of magnificent in his first three starts, all wins, including taking the FrontRunner by 7¾ lengths. But in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, he was stuck on the outside the entire race while Good Magic had an easy trip. It was as if he was taking surface streets while Good Magic was on I-5 going to Del Mar on a good day. And still Bolt finished third. (2) Good Magic gets my second vote and (3) Solomini get third because of his second in the BC Juvenile and winning effort in the Los Alamitos Futurity. He was placed third after getting a slap on the hoof from the stewards for impeding the progress of Instilled Regard down the stretch.

Two-year-old female: This one is tough and I just don’t feel we know enough about many of these fillies. So, I’ll go against conventional wisdom and vote for (1) Rushing Fall, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. She’s three for three, all on the turf. In second, I’ve got (2) Caledonia Road, who won the BC Juvenile Fillies, normally a lock for this category. Third is tough. You’ve got Dream Tree, undefeated in three races, Lady Ivanka, two for two but without a horsey clothing line at this point, and Road To Victory, who is two for two. So, I’ll go with Moonshine Memories, with two Grade 1 wins and disappointing seventh in the BC Juvenile Fillies.

That’s it for my picks. And, just to be fair, I’ll be grading them when the real electorate casts their votes to get the final three candidates. Now, how I’ll measure success will most likely be the way that makes me look the best.

Santa Anita review

Pee Wee Reese had his way with this field to win the $75,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes over 6½ furlongs on grass down the hill. The 5 year old won by 2¾ lengths over Next Shares.

“The game plan was to just go out there and if they wanted to catch us, they’d have to try,” said winning trainer Phil D’Amato. “This horse just keeps getting better and better. His weight, his confidence, the way Joe [Talamo] rides him with a lot of confidence — I think that’s all making a big difference.”

D’Amato is looking toward the Frank E. Kilroe Turf Mile on March 10 for his next race.

Pee Wee paid $7.20, $4.60 and $3.60.
