Racing! Bad TV and Kentucky Derby preps

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we finish up five straight days of racing.

As always, thanks to Eric (Manny) Sondheimer for doing the Monday newsletter. His story and interview with John Shear was priceless.

Knowing my penchant for time-shifting almost all my non-sports television and being months behind on every show, I caught an episode of “Me, Myself & I” called “Family Tree.” It’s a clever concept as you view life through the eyes of the same guy at ages 14, 40 and 65.

It was such a clever concept that CBS yanked it off the air after six episodes.

Anyway, this episode, the fifth one, had an intersection of two of my favorite things, newspapers and racing. It was about one of those family gatherings we all hate so much, with crazy uncles always giving advice.

One scene was obviously ripping off the famous “One word: plastics” scene from the movie “The Graduate.” Don’t remember? You can watch it here.

So a guy comes up to one of the kids and says, “One word to you, young man, newspapers. There will always be a job in newspapers.”

Did I mention this show is a comedy?

Anyway, later, a horse racing aficionado corners another youngster. “Secretariat could run on the dirt, on the turf, in the slop. It didn’t matter.”

The youngster, obviously not knowing what to say, answered: “Yeah, he was definitely a horse.”

Since the vast majority of stuff on television and movies is made up, (Anyone, see “I, Tonya” yet? Yeah, Tonya Harding knew nothing about the kneecapping of Nancy Kerrigan.) I decided to check the accuracy of that comment about Secretariat.

In fact, Big Red was two for two on the turf, winning the Man O’ War at Belmont by 5 lengths and the Canadian International at Woodbine, his last race, by 6 1/2.

He was two for three on the slop. He won the Laurel Futurity by 8 and the Bay Shore at Aqueduct by 4 1/2. He finished second in the Woodward at Belmont by 4 1/2.

So, guess they got that one right.

Road to the Derby

Last year’s Kentucky Derby wasn’t very strong as far as West Coast contenders were concerned, after Mastery was taken off the trail because of injury. This year is shaping up exactly the opposite.

Two of the three points-bearing weekend stakes for 3-year-olds were won by locally stabled horses.

On Saturday at the Fair Grounds, Instilled Regard romped to a 3 3/4-length win in the Lecompte for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Last we saw this colt, he was interfered with by Solomini, allowing McKinzie to be awarded first place in the Los Alamitos Futurity. This Santa Anita-based horse is definitely on the rise.

And at Oaklawn Park on Monday, Mourinho went gate to wire to win the Smarty Jones Stakes. The Bob Baffert-trained colt was never really tested and he won by 3 1/4 lengths. Drayden Van Dyke made the trip to Arkansas to ride the colt.

In the other stake, at Aqueduct on Saturday, Firenze Fire rallied late to pass Seven Trumpets to win the Jerome Stakes. Firenze was coming off a disappointing seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar.

The next series of preps will be on Feb. 3 with the Robert Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita, the Withers Stakes at Aqueduct and the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream.

Santa Anita review

Madame Stripes made a nice move off the rail, went three wide and accelerated in deep stretch to win the Grade 3 $100,000 Megahertz Stakes for older fillies and mares over 1 mile on the turf.

She overcame a troubled start when she hopped out of the gate and had to come from far back before winning by 1 1/4 lengths. She was the second favorite and paid $9.00, $4.00 and $2.60. Favorite Insta Erma was second.

“When she jumped like that, Kent [Desormeaux] was able to get her covered up and she relaxed,” winning trainer Neil Drysdale said. But when I saw 47 (46.98 for the first half-mile), I said ‘Uh oh, uh oh!’ The way it turned out, the favorite moved early and I was glad to see that. I think this mare is stronger this year. She’s getting better.”
