Busch’s one-day sweep makes NASCAR history

Share

Kyle Busch made history Saturday by sweeping a single-day doubleheader of NASCAR support races at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, and did so in dominating fashion.

After easily winning the Camping World Truck Series race at the two-mile track, Busch also won the Stater Bros. 300 Nationwide Series race under the lights.

It was the first time in the history of NASCAR’s three national series that a driver won two events on the same day.

“It’s awesome to be able to win two races in one day,” said Busch, 23, who starts 10th in today’s Auto Club 500 Sprint Cup Series race.

In addition to the two races, Busch also had Cup practice Saturday and estimated he spent about six hours in race cars and trucks during the day. “I’m ready for a nap,” he said.

In the Nationwide event, Busch had the strongest car for most of the 150-lap race, but, on a restart with 16 laps left, he left the pits in second place behind pole-sitter Carl Edwards.

Busch quickly passed him and then held off Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano, who finished second and third, respectively. Edwards faded to fourth.

Busch earlier had a near-flawless performance in the San Bernardino County 200 truck race. Driving a Toyota Tundra prepared by Billy Ballew Motorsports, Busch started on the pole and led a track-record 95 of 100 laps. It was his 10th win on the truck circuit.

Todd Bodine, who won the season opener at Daytona International Speedway last week, finished second and Chad McCumbee was third.
