Two No. 11 seeds pull upsets in NCAA women’s openers

The NCAA women’s tournament’s opening day featured three upsets, two by 11th-seeded teams — Gonzaga and Miami — and one by ninth-seeded De Paul on Friday.

Gonzaga’s 82-69 victory came over sixth-seeded George Washington at Corvallis, Ore.

The Colonials (29-4) outrebounded the Bulldogs 51-39 but shot only 29.3%.

Gonzaga (25-7) will next play Oregon State.

Oregon State 74, South Dakota State 62: The Beavers (27-4) trailed by four early in the second half before taking command against the Jackrabbits (24-9) at Corvallis.

Duke 54, Albany 52: Rebecca Greenwell made a three-pointer with 14.9 seconds left that lifted the fourth-seeded Blue Devils (22-10), who overcame 27 turnovers against the 13th-seeded Great Danes (24-9) at Durham, N.C. Duke next plays Mississippi State on Sunday.

Mississippi State 57, Tulane 47: Breanna Richardson produced 15 points and 12 rebounds as the fifth-seeded Bulldogs (27-6) rallied past the Green Wave (22-11), which shot 28% and missed 11 consecutive shots after taking a 29-27 lead in the second half at Durham.

ALBANY REGIONAL

California 78, Wichita State 66: Reshanda Gray had 22 points and nine rebounds as the Bears (24-9) turned back a 9-0 run by the Shockers (29-5) to pull away at Berkeley. Cal next plays Texas on Sunday.

Texas 66, Western Kentucky 64: Brooke McCarty made two free throws for the fifth-seeded Longhorns (23-10) with 20.8 seconds left to help defeat the 12th-seeded Hilltoppers (30-5) at Berkeley.

Dayton 78, Iowa State 66: Ally Malott had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the seventh-seeded Flyers (26-6) past 10th-seed Cyclones (18-13), who got no closer than seven in the second half at Lexington, Ky. Dayton next plays Kentucky on Sunday.

Kentucky 97, Tennessee State 52: The second-seeded Wildcats used a 16-0 run in the first 10 minutes to quickly put aside the 15th-seeded Tigers (18-13) at Lexington, Ky.

OKLAHOMA CITY REGIONAL

Miami 86, Washington 80: Sophomore Adrienne Motley made seven of 12 three-point attempts and ended up with 30 points to lift the 11th-seeded Hurricanes (20-12) to an upset of the sixth-seeded Huskies (23-10) at Iowa City, Iowa. Miami next plays Iowa on Sunday.

Iowa 75, American 67: After a 36-36 halftime tie, the third-seeded Hawkeyes (25-7) used a 15-6 run to hold off 14th-seeded Eagles (24-9) at Iowa City.

DePaul 79, Minnesota 72: The ninth-seeded Blue Demons used a 22-4 second-half run to rally past the eighth-seeded Gophers (23-10) at South Bend, Ind. DePaul (27-7) next plays Notre Dame on Sunday.

Notre Dame 77, Montana 43: The top-seeded Irish shot 62.3% in the victory over the Grizzlies at South Bend.

Arkansas 57, Northwestern 55: The 10th-seeded Razorbacks (18-13) come back from a 13-point deficit to defeat the seventh-seeded Wildcats (23-9) at Waco, Texas. Arkansas next plays Baylor on Sunday.

Baylor 77, Northwestern State 36: The second-seeded Bears (31-3) took command early en route to the victory over the 15th-seeded Demons (19-15) at Waco.

South Carolina 81, Savannah State 48: The top-seeded Gamecocks (31-2) used a 21-1 run early in the second half to break away from the 16th-seeded Tigers (21-11) at Columbia, S.C. South Carolina last played an NCAA game on its campus in 2002. South Carolina next plays Syracuse on Sunday.

Syracuse 72, Nebraska 69: Brianna Butler scored 17 points, including the go-ahead basket with 58.7 seconds left, to lift the eighth-seeded Orange (22-9) over the ninth-seeded Cornhuskers (21-11) at Columbia.
