Jerry Jones proud to have Greg Hardy, but Cowboys haven’t discussed long-term deal

The Cowboys locked up a significant part of their defensive line for the foreseeable future when they signed defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford to a five-year extension on Saturday.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Friday that Crawford was the only player they were currently negotiating with.

But what about a potential long-term deal with Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy?

Despite Hardy facing the possibility of a lengthy suspension from the NFL for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, the Cowboys signed Hardy to a one-year deal in March.

The NFL’s investigation concluded that Hardy used physical force against his former girlfriend and suspended him 10 games. An appeal later reduced the suspension to four games, a decision Hardy recently decided to accept.

“We haven’t really broached it up to this point,” said Jones, a Friday guest on 105.3 The Fan’s Ben and Skin show 1/8KRLD-FM3/8, when asked about a Hardy contract extension. “But it certainly is something, like we said, any young players that only have a year on their contract, then that becomes something that we look at.

“We obviously know the circumstances that were out there when we brought Greg in here. Boy, he’s just been a model guy for our football team and is as hard a worker as anybody that we have out there. He certainly has demonstrated day-in and day-out, night-in and night-out how important football is to him.

“I admire him for where he is at this point. We all know there’s no tolerance for those types of things in the NFL. He certainly will pay a price and knows there’s no tolerance for any of that going forward.”

Jerry Jones mentioned Hardy on Thursday when discussing their most significant offseason moves. The Cowboys owner and general manager said he’s “as proud that we have Hardy as anything we did in the offseason.”

“He really is impactful to the team just right down to the tangible aspect of a given drill,” Jerry Jones told The Fan’s G-Bag Nation show. “He makes a difference out there. And he makes a difference not only with his attitude but his actual skill. So, he’s a star for us.”
