Source says Cowboys’ Witten will be ‘ready and good to go’ Sunday

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten hasn’t missed a Cowboys game the past 12 years.

He has played in 189 consecutive games with 133 starts in a row since missing a game against the Eagles as rookie in 2003 with a fractured jaw.

So the notion that Witten won’t go on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons because of injuries to both ankles and a knee is folly to his Cowboys teammates and those close to the 13-year veteran. Witten officially is listed as day-to-day and may not get on the practice field this week.

But a source close to Witten said he’ll be “ready and good to go” Sunday.

Backup tight end Gavin Escobar said he was shocked to see Witten even coming off the field as he did three times in 85 plays against the Eagles.

As far the Falcons game?

“I wouldn’t bet against him,” Escobar said. “He’s the toughest guy I have seen play football. I was surprised to see him run out of the huddle. He doesn’t leave the field

“I knew something was going on. He’s banged up. But he is tough. He is going to get as healthy as he can.”

Escobar said he saw Witten on Tuesday, and Witten looked a lot better than “I was expecting him to look. You can’t even tell he was banged up.”

Witten walked without a limp through the locker room Tuesday as he headed to the trainers room, though both ankles were purple.

“Witten is a certified war daddy,” defensive end Jeremy Mincey said. “I have the utmost respect for Witten. He goes out and competes. He plays hard. He plays with heart. He plays with passion and desire.”
